Unlike many other internal engine components that require complete engine disassembly for replacement, the oil pump drive is accessible from the oil pump console on the front of the engine.
After having a customer's freshly built track car blow up because of a failed oil pump drive (see photo), we decided to offer a heat treated, shot-peened, chromoly oil pump hex drive to replace the inferior, non-heat treated mild-steel factory pump drive on the M96 and M97 engine, which has known to fail, shearing in two, resulting in a catastrophic loss of oil pressure. Don't let this happen to you!

If you track your car, this is one item you don't want to fail. If the oil pump drive breaks, the engine will instantly have zero oil pressure and will result in an engine failure so bad, it won't be rebuildable.
